Atlanta’s Greatest Black History Hits/Misses — RESULTS

I’ve never been more excited to present data in my life.

For the 45 of you that did complete my survey, THANK YOU.  A voluptuous fruit basket will be sent to your anonymous household within the next two weeks.

For the rest of you, your loss.  Way to miss out on science.  A mere 5 questions were asked:

1. Age
2. Race
3. Relationship to Atlanta
4. Rank Atlanta’s 5 Best Contributions to Black History.
5. Rank Atlanta’s 5 Worst Contributions to Black History.

The contributions that respondents had the option to choose from were:

Birthplace of MLK
Freaknik
“Love in Your Mouth” – Kilo Ali
Mike Vick
The Gold Club
Outkast
“Welcome to Atlanta” – JD/Ludacris
Real Housewives of Atlanta
Magic City
Bronner Brothers Hair Show
“ATL”, the Movie
String of Black Mayors
The Atlanta University Center
Wayne Williams
The “A-Town Stomp”
“Drumline”, the Movie
“FILA” – Lil Scrappy
Bill Campbell

THE RESULTS

AGE

No surprise that the majority are in the 18-25 range.  I will say that I’m impressed at the almost 10% performance by the 56-65 crowd.  None of you look a day older than anonymously 40.

RACE

So I made Race an open ended question, partly because I didn’t feel like being sensative and listing all of the possible races.  On top of that, “Other” is sorta rude.  Leaving this open for the respondent resulted in the funniest part of the survey.  Here’s what people wrote:

White
Ok, Ok, I’m White
Black
Yellow
Asian-Indian
Whitey
Super White
White Jew
White (Caucasian if you want to be a dick about it)
Caucasian
Black Actors
White, but could definitely pass for Eskimo (Read: Ambigulously racial)
African-American
Norwegian, bitch
Negro apparently, according to the 2010 Census
All the Above
Arguable
Black and White
Multiracial
White (but still sexy)
Wonderbread
Whizzy
Whitebread
Black, fool

I may have stumbled upon the greatest, sassiest sample in the history of science.

RELATIONSHIP TO ATLANTA

I’m extremely pleased that there was a wide variety of people answering the survey, since the opinions of outsiders are important, in addition to the significantly more important opinions of Atlantans.

ATLANTA’S BEST CONTRIBUTIONS

The following 5 were most often listed as one of Atlanta’s 5 Best Contributions to Black History:

Birthplace of MLK (43/45) – 95.6%

Outkast (41/45) – 91.1%

String of Black Mayors (24/45) – 53.3%

Freaknik (19/45) – 42.2%

The Atlanta University Center (17/45) – 37.8%

I wouldn’t be a true Atlantan if I didn’t mention a strong 6th place performance by Mike Vick (15).

In addition to that, the following 5 were most often listed as Atlanta’s “VERY BEST” Contributions to Black History:

Birthplace of MLK (25)

Outkast (8)

The Atlanta University Center (4)

String of Black Mayors (2)

ATLANTA’S WORST CONTRIBUTIONS

The following 5 were most often listed as one of Atlanta’s 5 Worst Contributions to Black History:

The Real Housewives of Atlanta (38/44) – 86.4%

Bill Campbell (26/44) – 59.1%

The Gold Club (18/44) – 40.9%

Wayne Williams (15/44) – 34.1%

“ATL” the Movie & “Love in Your Mouth” – Kilo Ali (14/44) – 31.8%

Closely trailing were “Freaknik” (also on the “BEST” list) & “Bronner Brothers Hair Show” with 13.

In addition to that, the following 5 were most often listed as Atlanta’s “VERY WORST” Contribution to Black History:

The Real Housewives of Atlanta (18)

Bill Campbell (8)

Wayne Williams (4)

“ATL” the Movie (3)

So, I almost ended the study there, but something wasn’t sitting right.  I began having second thoughts about my full trust in the entire population with regards to Atlanta and things that are Black. I mean, while “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” has forever tarnished our city, is it that much worse than Bill Campbell, the man that ran our city into the ground, or famed CHILD SERIAL KILLER Wayne Williams?  I don’t know, something just isn’t right.

So, since this is my survey, my blog, and I can pretty much do whatever I want, I decided to REMIX the survey.

It pains me to do this, but 34 of you have just been eliminated. Sorry I’m not sorry.

Who’s left, you say?

If you are:

Black/Mixed/Multiracial/”White Jew”/”White, but could definitely pass for eskimo (read: ambiguously racial)”

AND

Went to High School and/or College in Atlanta

YOU HAVE MADE IT TO FINAL JEOPARDY.

THE RESULTS: 2.0

11 TOTAL: EIGHT 18-25 Year Olds & THREE 56-65 Year Olds

7 Black, 2 Mixed, 1 Jew, 1 Eskimo

ATLANTA’S BEST CONTRIBUTIONS, 2.0

The following 5 were most often listed as one of Atlanta’s 5 Best Contributions to Black History:

Birthplace of MLK & Outkast (10/11) – 90.9%

String of Black Mayors (9/11) – 81.8%

The Atlanta University Center (6/11) – 54.5%

Freaknik (5/11) – 45.4%

Bronner Brothers Hair Show (4/11) – 36.4%

While the order isn’t that different (with the exception of the surge by the Hair Show), do note the fact that Benjamin, Andre and Daddy Fat Sacks have just tied with Martin Luther King Jr.

In addition to that, the following 5 were most often listed as Atlanta’s “VERY BEST” Contribution to Black History:

The Atlanta University Center (4)

Outkast & MLK (3)

String of Black Mayors (1)

Even though I did put the AUC as my #1, I didn’t expect it to surpass MLK and Outkast. With that said, I’m quite pleased with the result.

ATLANTA’S WORST CONTRIBUTIONS, 2.0

The following 5 were most often listed as one of Atlanta’s 5 Worst Contributions to Black History:

The Real Housewives of Atlanta & Bill Campbell (8/11) – 72.7%

The Gold Club (7/11) – 63.6%

The Bronner Brothers Hair Show (5/11) – 45.4%

Freaknik & “Love in Your Mouth” – Kilo Ali (4/11) – 36.4%

So, apparently the jury’s out on Freaknik and the Hair Show. Both have made an appearance on the BEST and WORST lists.  All but 2 people feel very strongly about them, either for good or for bad.

Interesting.

And don’t overlook the fact that The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s dominance of the WORST list has been diminished by the OG himself, Bill Campbell.

In addition to that, the following 5 were most often listed as Atlanta’s “VERY WORST” Contribution to Black History:

Bill Campbell & The Real Housewives of Atlanta (4)

Wayne Williams, The Bronner Brother’s Hair Show, & Freaknik (1)

CONCLUSIONS

I know people are all excited about the Census, but this might be the most important collection of data in America right now.

Mayor Reed, I’m not flat-out asking for the Key to the City, but please don’t hesitate to just give it to me.

And contrary to the swirling reports, if given the key, I was not planning on making duplicates, passing them out to my closest friends, and throwing myself a huge burfday bash.  I’ve got too much class for that, I just became a scientist.

  1. Z-dizzle, aka W, aka Zac, aka come to my party this Saturday says:

Rembert, you should present this in one of your classes. Call it “stats for ATL expats”. Make a milli. Live like you are a young money millionaire. End story.
